'Madagascar 3' Shuts Down Everything

Welcome back to the Box Office Report where there's something to be said for getting paid millions and millions of dollars for three hours worth of voice work.

1. Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted (Dreamworks): $60.3 million in 4,258 theaters

Any fears of a summer box office slump have been doused in large piles of money. After May was dominated by The Avengers and nothing else, totals are up 30 percent compared to the same weekend last year. last year. The third addition to the Madagascar franchise benefitted from a drought of family-friendly fare, but expectations were never low considering the success of the first two. I guess this means Sacha Baron Cohen hasn't been a total failure at the box office this year?

2. Prometheus (Fox): $50 million in 3,396 theaters

Directed by Ridley Scott, written by Damon Lindelof, and starring Michael Fassbender and Charlize Theron? Okay, you've appealed to all of our interests. Still, we're weird. For an R-rated sci-fi thriller, $50 million is a heck of an opening weekend. Remember Super 8, the sci-fi family movie written and directed by J.J. Abrams, produced by Spielberg, with Kyle Chandler fresh off the Friday Night Lights finale media push? It only took in $35 million over its opening weekend.

3. Snow White and the Huntsman (Universal): $23 million in 3,777 theaters [week 2]

We're still waiting for the gritty, live-action Thumbelina adaptation.

4. Men In Black III (Sony): $13.5 million in 3,792 theaters [Week 3]

Let's do a Men in Black IV with a relaunched cast. We'll get Donald Glover and Tom Cruise as the new detectives and Leiv Schreiber can play the bad guy. Will Smith cameos as a department head, and Tommy Lee Jones gets a scene drinking a martini in a Hawaiian shirt enjoying retirement. We're glad we have this in writing so Sony can cut us a fat check in 2016.

5. Marvel's The Avengers (Buena Vista): $10.8 million in 3,129 theaters [Week 6]

The Avengers is going to gross over $600 million domestically, and it's the third highest grossing movie of all-time with a $1.3 billion worldwide take. Which is all great and good until July, when The Dark Knight Rises is going to rise up, punch it in the mouth and into fourth place.
