Still Hungry
The Hunger Games is still the only game at the megaplexes. Elsewhere, Sam Worthington continues to work, and a non-prostitution-related Julia Roberts fairy tale fails to ignite interest. It's the Box Office Report.
1. The Hunger Games (Lionsgate): $61.1 million in 4,137 theaters [Week 2]
The box office behemoth known as The Hunger Games fell 60 percent in its second week, which means it only earned $61 million this weekend, or $30 million more than John Carter made in its first weekend. Total gross as of today: $251,033,000. Projected cumulative gross: $350,000,000. Cost to produce? A relatively reasonable $78 million.
Let's now graph Hunger Games mania to the stock market, with a look at Lionsgate's (NYSE: LGF) recent Wall Street performance:
Things appear to by calming down. Time to kill more children!
2. Wrath of the Titans (WB): $34.2 million in 3,545 theaters
The cinematic excreta known as 2010's Clash of the Titans is back with this sequel, which only managed to earn a little over half of what its predecessor did. It reminds me of that old Hollywood adage: "Burn audiences once, shame on you. Burn audiences twice, then those same suckers will probably keep showing up, so let's get going on a third installment."
3. Mirror Mirror (Relativity): $19 million in 3,603 theaters
As Box Office Mojo points out, this Tarsem-directed Snow White retelling, featuring Julia Roberts' meanderingly accented Evil Queen, landed in the middle of such other modestly budgeted child-fantasy fare as Bridge to Terabithia, The Spiderwick Chronicles, Nim's Island and The Last Mimzy. On the plus side, it can take some comfort in knowing it has the least stupid name of all of them.
4. 21 Jump Street (Sony): $15 million in 3,148 theaters [Week 3]
Attempt #1 to Land in Promotional Materials: "White men can jump!"
5. Dr. Seuss' The Lorax (Universal): $8 million in 3,264 theaters [Week 5]
Attempt #2 to Land in Promotional Materials: "This Lorax has legs!"
