Spielberg Brings His Magic Touch to SNL's 'Laser Cats'

Steven Spielberg made a cameo on last night's Saturday Night Live -- and brought with him one of his most enjoyable films in years.

The specter of losing three of Saturday Night Live's strongest members -- Kristen Wiig, Andy Samberg and Jason Sudeikis -- loomed over this weekend's episode, hosted by Josh Brolin, who admitted in his monologue that he just wanted to do something "really, really dumb" for a change. And the dumb certainly came, though it was thankfully more a case of smart sketches being dressed up in dumb sheep's clothing. Samberg in particular made his essentialness known, with an inspired Game of Thrones sketch in which he played the 13-year-old consultant responsible for the HBO fantasy series' generous helping of T & A. Also commendable was the latest installment of "Laser Cats", the lo-fi space opera starring Samberg and Bill Hader. This time, Steven Spielberg popped by to convince Lorne Michaels that his sequel, which borrowed heavily from his best movies, was a classic-in-the-making. Michaels wasn't so sure.

And there was a dollop of controversy in the proceedings, as well, with Taran Killam reprising his vicious Piers Morgan impression in a sendup of CNN's celebrity-centric coverage of the Trayvon Martin controversy. Low-point: Nasim Pedrad's Kim Kardashian, future ex- Kanye West on her arm, saying, "I also know what it's like to have a black man in me."

And finally, if watching Hader and Wiig break up turns you on, you might want to catch "The Californians", a soap opera spoof about a clan of blonde SoCal airheads who talk in freeway metaphors. Warning: May only be funny to actual Californians (and not even then).
