Big Boi Busted; Larry David Has Groupies

Welcome to the Smart Set. Every morning we bring you the gossip coverage, filtered. Today: Big Boi is busted getting off a cruise, Larry David refuses to make nice with Miss New York only to be bailed out by his legions of followers, and Alec Baldwin's moving for his yoga-teacher girlfriend.

• Outkast rapper Big Boi was arrested for drug possession Sunday as he disembarked from a cruise ship in Miami. He was charged with “three counts possession of a controlled substance and one count possession of drug paraphernalia” and is “said to have been carrying ecstasy pills, MDMA powder, and Viagra” when customs agents and dogs busted the 36-year-old coming off the ship. TMZ notes that the charges are all felonies, and that “we’re told Big Boi did not have a prescription for the Viagra.”  [Us and TMZ]

• Larry David wasn’t interested in talking to Kaitlin Monte, the newly-crowned Miss New York last week as they were waiting to gain entrance to the the VIP area “of the Empire Hotel’s rooftop party space” at Rolling Stone’s “party to benefit Music Unites.” David was overheard saying, “So what’s your talent?” At least he had some fans in attendance. Even though True Blood’s Alexander Skarsgard was also there, “a bevy of beauties clamored for the 64-year-old David's attention, shouting ‘L.D.! L.D.!’ in hopes that he'd take a photo with them. Despite not being a fan of the stop-and-chat, David stayed long enough to drink a single club soda and to briskly greet a number of fans.” [Gatecrasher]

• Atlantic Wire media diet subject and author of the seminal Joe DiMaggio profile "The Silent Season of a Hero," Gay Talese was on-hand at Fenway Park for last night’s extra innings tilt between the Red Sox and Yankees. According to ESPN New York senior writer Andrew Marchand, who sat next to Talese for all three games of this weekend's series, he’s “[w]riting a big story on [Yankees manager Joe] Girardi,” possibly for The New Yorker. • Marc Leder, co-CEO of Sun Capital Partners, reportedly threw parties at his rented Bridgehampton estate last month that made it seem “as if the Playboy Mansion [had] met the East End.” The (divorced) private equity czar paid a reported $500,000 to rent a “sprawling beachfront mansion on Surf Side Road” for the month on July, where “guests cavorted nude in the pool and performed sex acts, scantily dressed Russians danced on platforms and men twirled lit torches to a booming techno beat.” On the last night of the lease, witnesses describe a "chubby white meathead" and a "tanned" female who stripped and jumped into the pool naked. "The guy hopped in first in his briefs and the girl standing on the perimeter of the pool took her top off," one witness said. "The next thing you know, her bra is off. Then she took her bottom off and was butt-naked and jumped in the pool." Another attendee said, "They were in the pool swimming together. Then they started making out." "Multiple witnesses" say the couple "continued their show outside the pool and performed sex acts on a chair in front of astonished guests." Leder left for his home in Boca Raton last Monday, but reportedly said he’d be back for fashion week. According to one friend, the "once-conservative" Leder "went wild" in 2009 after his ex-wife, Lisa "admitted to cheating on him with her 23-year-old tennis coach after 22 years of marriage." • Desperate Housewives is ending next May, after its eighth season, ABC programming chief Paul Lee and creator Marc Cherry confirmed Sunday at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. Nikki Finke reported that the show’s cast was "shocked and saddened" by the decision, since the cast has another year left on their contracts and, as Entertainment Weekly notes, Cherry "indicated that he wanted the show to extend through a ninth year." He downplayed that position Sunday. "If we’d gone nine," said Cherry, "I had no idea what it was going to be." In the meantime, writes The Wrap, Cherry can take comfort in knowing his show Hallelujah, "a pilot the network passed on this year, is being redeveloped and may get a second chance" at ABC. • Former U.S. men’s soccer national team coach Bob Bradley lost his job to a handsome German several weeks ago, but he’s still an in-demand manager, albeit not in the most stable parts of the world. Along with Colombian Fancisco Maturana and Serbian Zoran Filipović, Bradley’s reportedly one of the three finalists for the Egyiptian national team job, which was vacated by Hassan Shehata--"the country’s most successful manager"--in early June. Last week, the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) publicly identified "French coach Hervé Renard [as] the most likely candidate to lead Egypt to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil before they halted talks about him" and then got turned down by "Portuguese football manager Nelo Vingada, who currently manages Chinese Super League side Dalian Shide FC." Which leaves the three foreign candidates. According to a message posted to the EFA Web site, "The EFA board will meet with three coaches this week to pick one of them...President Samir Zaher and his deputy, Hany Abou-Reida and board member Hazem El-Hawary will make detailed reports about the three candidates before the board meets to choose one of them." • Associate Justice Elena Kagan was spotted with another woman Friday at small plates restaurant Lincoln enjoying oysters, rockfish, "and a pisco sour, same cocktail her colleague Antonin Scalia ordered at the Thomas Circle eatery a few days earlier." [The Reliable Source]
• Street artist Shepard Fairey (of "Obey" fame) "has painted a giant mural of an elephant and a dove" as part of a renovation to the West Hollywood Library. It’s expected to be up for about a year. [GalleyCat]

• Mary Kate and Ashley Olson’s younger sister Elizabeth says rumors she will star in a Sex and the City movie prequel are "not real." [Jezebel]
• New York Times reporter Alan Schwarz is leaving the sports beat after writing more than 100 articles about the dangers of concussions. He’ll be taking up the paper’s National Education beat. In an email, he says the move is a "promotion, not an exile." [Concussion Inc.]
• Lisa Cohen is stepping down as senior fashion editor at GQ after 28 years in the position. Officially: she says she wants to spend more time with her family [WWD]

• Alec Baldwin’s "posh Central Park West apartment is slated to go back on the market tomorrow for $9.5 million." The apartment has views of the Central Park reservoir and "boasts over 3,000 square feet," which sounds perfect for "an Upper West Side loyalist" like Baldwin, except that his "yoga instructor-girlfriend, Hilaria Thomas" apparently "prefers downtown." • More real-estate dealings, this time in D.C.: FCC chairman Julius Genachowski "sold a seven-bedroom, four-bath house on Porter Street in Cleveland Park for $1.8 million." No word on his new digs, but the Porter Street house also "has an in-law suite with two bedrooms and parking for four cars." Among the Fox News set, Special Report With Bret Baier host Bret Baier and his wife Amy "bought a house on Dunmore Lane in DC’s Berkley neighborhood for $1.2 million." Also, Tucker Carlson and wife Susan "sold a six-bedroom, eight-bath Colonial in Kent for $4 million" featuring "a heated pool, six fireplaces, and an in-law suite" for "a seven-bedroom, six-bath Colonial for $2 million" that’s less than a mile away and also in D.C.’s Kent neighborhood, and has "a two-car garage and an au pair suite."
