Halo Nets $200 Million, Bigger Than Any Movie This Year

But fell short of the sum taken in by the Call of Duty sequel

Microsoft has announced that the fourth installment of their space-themed first-person shooter franchise, Halo: Reach, has netted $200 million dollars in sales in only one day of release. To put that massive number in perspective, it beats out the opening day numbers of any Hollywood blockbuster ever, and it far outpaces this year's opening weekend numbers of Iron Man 2 ($128 million) and Alice in Wonderland ($116 million). Still, Bungie and Microsoft were certainly hoping that the title would unseat the current gaming record-holder Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 which brought in $310 million when it was released last year.

  • 'That's a Very Big Number'  "for the video game business, in which most titles don't ever bring in that much money," reports Ben Fritz at The Los Angeles Times. "But although Microsoft bragged that it's the 'biggest entertainment launch of 2010' in the U.S. -- making an awkward comparison with the opening weekends of movies for which tickets cost an average of under $8 each -- it's not the biggest opening day ever for a video game."

  • In Line With Expectations  "Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter had expected the new 'Halo' release to kick off with as much as $220 million-plus on its first day," points out Georg Szalai at The Hollywood Reporter. "The new game, which hit stores Tuesday, also exceeded the previous 'Halo's' first-day haul of $170 million, which had set an opening record in 2007."
  • 'Microsoft Is Understandably Crowing'  writes Matt Peckham at PC World. "It'll be interesting to see whether Medal of Honor or Call of Duty: Black Ops, both releasing later this year, have a shot at one-upping Halo: Reach, or coming anywhere near Modern Warfare 2's numbers. I'd wager 'maybe' on the former, and 'not a chance' on the latter."
  • Multiplayer Numbers Are Where It Wins  notes Kevin Schram at TFTS, who roughly estimates that 3.3 million copies of the game were sold. "The folks at 1UP are reporting that Halo: Reach has broken the record of concurrent Xbox Live gamers playing the game at the same time. The record was previously held by, you guessed it, Halo 3."
  • Keeps Up Franchise Momentum  "Every major installment has grown in scope and popularity, firmly cementing the 'Halo' franchise as one of the most popular entertainment properties in the world over the past decade," said Phil Spencer, corporate vice president of Microsoft Game Studios in an AFP report.
