In a move that's destined to create another Four Loko-like frenzy, nineteen state attorneys general are calling on Pabst Brewing Company to "stop selling or alter" its new fruity alcohol drink Blast by Colt 45. With rapper Snoop Dogg as a chief sponsor, the beverage promises to deliver "binge-in-a-can" with 12 percent alcohol by volume and 23.5 ounces per can. The AGs in Massachusetts, Illinois, Ohio and elsewhere want Pabst to stop selling the beverage or lower its alcohol content.
"At a time when we're fighting to prevent underage drinking and binge drinking, we are urging Pabst to rethink the dangers posed by Blast," said Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley, whose statement says she is joining her counterparts in eighteen other states. "We also believe the promotion of this 'binge-in-a-can' is aimed at the youngest of drinkers as well as underage youth."
Similar to the banned Four Loko energy drink, Blast comes in all sorts of fruity flavors like lemonade, grape, strawberry watermelon, and blueberry pomegranate. One of the key differences is that Blast doesn't have a caffeine additive, which the FDA later banned in such drinks. In Four Loko's case, pulling the drink from stores caused a last-minute rush on the illicit substance, which immediately inherited a certain aura of hipness. Will the same thing happen to Blast? Count on it.
