Derek Alderman

Derek Alderman is a Professor of Geography at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and President of the American Association of Geographers. His research examines the role of place naming in the context of African American identity politics and civil rights struggles in the southeastern United States, particularly in relation to the geographies of Martin Luther King, Jr. street naming. He is co-author of Civil Rights Memorials and the Geography of Memory (2008) and co-editor of The Political Life of Urban Streetscapes: Naming, Politics, and Place (2017).
