Take a Ride With the Pilot of the Goodyear Blimp

By Paul Rosenfeld

In 1925, the first Goodyear Blimp set out into the American skies. While the practical purposes for the oversized aircraft have long since passed, Goodyear still maintains three blimps around the country.

“It’s a throwback to a bygone era,” says David Bowling, pilot of the California-based Goodyear Blimp. “It’s almost like a flying museum—it’s flying history actually.”

In the short documentary, The Spirit of America, Senior Pilot David Bowling explores the sky around Los Angeles and explains the mystique that continues to surround the flying machines. The film also includes an original score from composer Roy Bemelmans.

The Spirit of America is part of an ongoing documentary project known as I am Los Angeles. The series profiles varying individuals around the city, from a homicide detective to an urban farmer.
