Latte Portraiture and the Willy Wonka of Coffee

By Alessandra Ram

Sure, an adorable, foamy heart in your chai latte makes for a (somewhat standard) Instagram photo, but it doesn't compare to the Manhattan skyline.

For Mike Breach, coffee is more than a delicious drink; it is his medium. In the video above, Breach tells the team from Tumblr Storyboard how he began the art of "coffee portraiture" working in the back of a hotel kitchen. He hopes to become the "Willy Wonka of Coffee," that is, someone who aims to take the pretense out of what should be a fun experience.

Breach began by painting faces and gradually worked his way up to more intricate designs. The end result, he says, is more personal: "This doesn't last forever. I think that's what makes it special ... I just painted it for that person to see."
