Oregon-based cake maker Marcella Robin stakes her living on one simple, eternal truth: “People are delighted by cake. They love it.” This short documentary by the filmmakers of Cineastas, Tristan Stoch and Sean Grasso, features towering, colorful cakes with sassy names like “Please Don’t Eat the Daisies” and “Oregon Is for Lovers."
Even more dazzling is Marcella herself, who says she finds inspiration in old linoleum and wallpaper patterns and does a charming impression of her first boss. Originally trained in sculpting, Marcella is modest about her specialty, a type of layered mousse/sponge cake called entremet. She acknowledges that, like all crafts, designing the perfect cake is both “really important and … really unimportant.” But while her point that she’s “not painting Guernica” might be true, who would argue that a fastidiously baked portrait of beavers in love isn’t art?
