VHS Nostalgia: The 1990 Family Disney Vacation That Never Gets Old

By Kasia Cieplak-Mayr von Baldegg

Inspired by one of Vimeo's Weekend Projects, Memories RevisitedChris Zabriskie, a composer and musician in Florida, revisited a favorite, timeworn VHS tape of his family's 1990 trip to Disney. The rules of the project were simple: 1) tell a story about a family, 2) use archival media of some kind, and 3) make the video three minutes long (or less).

Re-watching the 22-year old tape, Zabriskie tells the story the trip and why the tape itself is so important. "Nearly all of my memories of Disneyland in 1990 come from this videotape," he says. "My sister has Angelman's syndrome, a genetic type of brain injury, and this tape has always been one of her favorite things to watch, often on repeat for hours on end. And as a result, I've probably taken the same trip to Disneyland hundreds -- literally hundreds -- of times since. " One by one, he revisits the moments of drama and fun that have been preserved on magnetic tape for a simple but powerful exploration of memory.
