An Illustrator's Manifesto, in Poetry and Pictures

By Kasia Cieplak-Mayr von Baldegg

Reminiscent of Edward Gorey's illustrated verse, Temujin Doran's short video celebrates "the finest occupation." While in art school, the filmmaker penned "a fictitious congratulatory letter written by a proud tutor to a recent graduate:"

The greatest illustration is not mere decoration
but succinct accumulation of creative demonstration
and ratifying observation of the intended subjectation
with alarming innovation and shining punctuation ...

And on it goes, accompanied by Doran's beautiful line drawings. The rhymes are so compelling, it might just inspire you to sketch a little something of your own.
