A Peek Inside Comedian Mitch Hedberg's Notebooks

By Kasia Cieplak-Mayr von Baldegg

"I gotta write these jokes, so I sit at the hotel at night and think of something that's funny, and then I go get a pen and I write it down. Or, if the pen's too far away, I have to convince myself that what I thought of ain't funny," Hedberg joked at the beginning of a set. This episode from the Modern Comedian documentary series reveals that Hedberg's pen was rarely far away. He always kept a notebook on hand to jot down ideas in a characteristic all-caps scrawl. In this moving portrait, Hedberg's wife and fellow comedian, Lynn Shawcroft, shares personal stories about their creative process and life together. Shawcroft was married to Hedberg for six years until his death in 2005. She maintains his site with interviews, videos, and scanned pages from his notes. Modern Comedian is produced by Scott Moran.
