Transcend Space, Time, and Gravity in 'Experience Human Flight'

By Kasia Cieplak-Mayr von Baldegg

Melbourne-based filmmakers Chas Mackinnon and Brad Goble flip the conventions of extreme sports videos to create this awe-inspiring, ethereal twist on the genre. The result looks more like a modern take on the Rapture than a viral video.

Mackinnon explains, “Most skydiving videos are edited with fast cuts and set to up-tempo music to highlight the extreme nature of the sport. We wanted to explore the other end of the spectrum. To achieve this, we presented the footage in slow motion and set it to a soundtrack which accentuates the dreamlike nature of the footage.”

The featured skydivers are pros, including world champions Fred Fugen and Vince Reffett, which must be why they all look so calm. The video was shot on a GoPro, a tiny $300 HD camera that can be mounted on a helmet for the first person perspective that (almost) makes you feel like you're there. Don't miss the shot at 00:25; it's just unreal.

This video was produced by Chas Mackinnon and Brad Goble in association with Melbourne Skydive Center for InfinityList.
