Vertigo Integration: Street View Goes to the Top of the World's Tallest Building

Google takes its cameras to a street of the vertical variety.

The Burj Khalifa is the tallest manmade structure in the world. It stands at 2,716.5 feet and comprises 163 stories. The Dubai-based building also boasts the fastest-moving elevators in the world -- they run at 22 mph -- and the highest swimming pool in the world (situated on the building's 76th floor).

The Burj Khalifa, in other words, and in addition to many other things, is a prime candidate for being Google Street Viewed. It's a weird and wondrous place, and yet it's not a place most people will get to visit in person. With its indoor and outdoor twists and turns, and with its vertical orientation, the tower also proved a prime spot for testing the one-year-old technology that is Google's Trekkers: Street View cameras mounted on backpacks to allow their operators extra mobility. In this case, the car-less Street View cams allowed their users to get shots from places like the Burj Khalifa's window-washing baskets on the 80th floor and the spire at the building's tippy-top.

Even when seen through a screen, the view from the top of the world's tallest building is astounding. And just a little bit terrifying.
