The Joy of Bedazzling Your Entire House

"We've been in the house over 40 years ... it was drug central. In fact, my window boxes were used as a drug drop, as I found out later, by the junkie across the street," Susan Gardner says of her home in Brooklyn's Boerum Hill. About a decade ago, the artist began creating a vibrant mosaic of glass, beads, and small toys that eventually spread across the whole facade of the building like technicolor ivy. She's been adding to it ever since and the spot has become a neighborhood fixture -- it even made its way into guidebooks. The neighborhood has changed over the years, however. "I think some people hate [the mosaic] who want the neighborhood to be gentrified and brownstone-y," Gardner says. "But they'll just have to live with it because I was here before them!"

This documentary portrait is part of a series called New Yorkers, created by Moonshot Productions, including portraits of a locksmith, a graffiti artist, and a Shaolin warrior monk. The filmmakers discuss the ongoing project in an interview here.
