New Hampshire's die-hard surfers get out on the water even in the dead of winter. "The hardest part is just putting on a cold wetsuit in February," Casey Lockwood explains; "it feels like it takes years off your life." This short clip, Salmon Theory, is from a longer documentary in progress by Dylan Ladds and Ryan Scura. "Salmon theory," Lockwood says, refers to the way salmon return to where they spawn. The feature film will be calledThe Granite Stoke, referencing the state's nickname. The video captures the bleak beauty of the snowy coast and one can imagine the appeal; if you can handle the cold, you'll have the waves to yourself. Ladds and Scura talk about the making of the film in a brief interview below. 

The Atlantic: What was the genesis of this project?

Dylan Ladds and Ryan Scura: Salmon Theory is one of the many short films we have made in the past year, while working on our feature documentary The Granite Stoke. The Granite Stoke is a documentary about the surfing community in our home state of New Hampshire. We discovered this community in the summer of 2007, after our senior year of high school. Throughout college, we talked about making a documentary about this group of people. Ryan proposed the project for a small grant from Middlebury College (where he studied), and it was accepted. This allowed us to buy a few necessary pieces of equipment and get started!

What are you working on now?

We are now in the process of editing the feature film. Aside from that, Dylan recently moved to Boston and is a teaching assistant for animation classes at Harvard and Brown. Ryan is moving to Boston soon and starting a job as a videographer for Brandeis. We also have a few smaller freelance video and photography projects in the works.

When is the feature film coming out?
