Thomas Goetz is entrepreneur in residence at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and founder of 1+1 Labs, an information-design firm. He is author of the bestselling book The Decision Tree, which was chosen by the Wall Street Journal as a Best Health book of 2010. More
He was previously the executive editor at Wired, where he helped lead the magazine to a dozen National Magazine Awards from 2001 through 2012. His stories there explored everything from the power of feedback loops to the paradox of cancer screening. This work has been selected for the Best American Science Writing, Best American Science & Nature Writing, and Best Technology Writing anthologies. His next book, The Remedy, tracks the emergence of the germ theory and the race to cure tuberculosis in the 19th century; it comes out from Penguin/Gotham in early 2014.
He has served as curator in residence for the Adobe Digital Museum, a council member for NASA’s Launch challenges, and was executive producer for the award-winning Discovery Channel documentary Earth 2050: The Future of Energy. His TED talk on redesigning medical data has been viewed more than 300,000 times.
Goetz holds a master's degree in public health from the University of California, Berkeley, and a master's in American literature from the University of Virginia. He graduated from Bates College.
