Watch Psychedelic Explosions on the Sun's Surface

By Kasia Cieplak-Mayr von Baldegg

In a new video, NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory uses a gradient to reveal a gorgeous swirl of coronal loops and cooler "moss" patterns. The SDO has been observing our home star and the "space weather" it generates since it launched in February, 2011, sharing some of the amazing images it captures on a multimedia page. For more high-resolution images of the sun and planets, don't miss Alan Taylor's In Focus gallery "Around the Solar System."
