Picture of the Day: Crash Down!

The Soyuz capsule prepares to make its landing (it's not even a splashdown!) deep in rural Kazakhstan in this picture taken Sunday. The capsule contained Russia's Oleg Kononenko, serving as Commander, along with NASA's Don Pettit and the European Space Agency's Andre Kuipers, both Flight Engineers. The cosmonaut and two astronauts were returning from six months aboard the International Space Station.

At its Flickr page, NASA provides other photos of the re-entry: the Soyuz among clouds, surrounded by helicopters, and, finally, raising an enormous dust cloud as it lands.
