From Bicycles to Bikini Babes: The Universal Visual Clichés of Instagram

Instantáneas, a stop-motion video sourced from Instagram photos, traces a romantic journey through life as seen through the lenses of hundreds of mobile phones. A lot of the images look more like stock photos (see this very similar video produced for Getty Images recently) or staged erotica than organic, user-created images of everyday situations, but the filmmaker, Lucas Otero, says the images are "all Instagram research." Real, or fake, or somewhere in between, the flickering sequence of moments is nonetheless a compelling exporation of a certain performative aesthetic -- not just, check this out! so much as, check me out! The still below, and the dozen like it in the video, are a perfect cellphone photo cliché:
