A short film by marine biologist Tierney Thys dramatizes "the secret life of plankton" with jaw-dropping footage of the ocean's weirdest microscopic organisms. Distributed by TEDEducation, the film seeks to "ignite wonder and curiosity about this hidden world that underpins our own food chain." A fish narrates, describing the wondrous creatures that share his world -- from comb jellies, with their rainbow-glowing raver cilia, to the crustacean Phronima, which inspired the look of the creatures in the film Aliens. For more spectacular footage and still photos of plankton, see the Plankton Chronicles website.
