Picture of the Day: A Close-Up View of a Faraway Galaxy

NASA's Hubble Telescope has turned out another gem with this image of Centaurus A, an elliptical galaxy more than 11 million light years away. With the telescope's ability to capture light ranging from near-infrared to ultraviolet wavelengths, Hubble was able to capture areas of the galaxy normally blocked out by space dust. Scientists believe that Centaurus A previously collided and merged with another galaxy, resulting in a warped shape and widespread star formation, which appears as small red clusters in this picture. Not shown in this picture is the supermassive black whole that lies at Centaurus A's center.
