Apple announced what analysts like to call a "blow-out quarter" today, selling more than 16 million iPhones during the three months that included the holiday season.

In fact, Apple has sold 30 million iPhones in the last two quarters. In the three years before that, the company had sold a total of 60 million units.

We chart the iPhone explosion above. While Apple's fiscal year begins in October, this chart uses the calendar year. If you're wondering what happened in the third quarter of 2008, that period saw the release of the iPhone 3G.
