Will Apple Fill in the Size Gaps?

By David Shenk
Obsessive Apple-followers like myself can now detect an intriguing near-term scenario for its mobile portfolio. As of now, Apple offers these portable internet devices:

- 2.5" iPhone
- 9.7" iPad
- 13.3" Macbook Air
- 13.3" MacBook and MacBook Pro

Sorting through rumors, it seems quite plausible that Apple will, over the next 6-12 months, introduce some machines that fill in the size gaps quite nicely:

- 2.5" iPhone
- new 7" iPad jr.
- the 9.7" iPad
- new 11.6" Macbook Air
- the 13.3" MacBook and MacBook Pro

Some will roll their eyes, or not care at all. But finding just the right size machine for just the right lifestyle and task choice is a part of how tools improve our lives. I, for one, have been using both the iPhone and iPad as fairly serious research and writing tools, and I look forward to seeing how new sizes will enhance that effort.
