Video of the Day: A Jumbo Jet Flying Low Over Maho Beach

More

Maho Beach, a popular tourist destination on the Dutch side of the Caribbean Island of Saint Martin, is known for its proximity to the Princess Juliana International Airport. Serving a number of major airlines that use large planes, including Airbus A340s and Boeing 747s, Maho Beach is covered in warning signs. "DANGER: Jet blast of departing and arriving aircraft can cause severe physical harm resulting in extreme bodily harm and/or death," they read. The blasts are so strong that they can knock sunbathers right into the ocean.

But the signs don't stop people from positioning themselves directly under the flightpath and watching the planes coming in or taking off, as this video shows. And it's just one of many you can find on YouTube. I found this one particularly compelling, though, because the videographer makes a 180-degree turn to follow the plane onto the runway. When facing inland you can see that the fence has been dinged more than a few times, presumably by the descending landing gear of a jumbo jet.
