Newspapers are dying, and the ramifications are dire. No one has figured out how to save journalism and the freedoms it protects. Well, here's my idea. Instead of going back and forth--charging for content, not charging, charging again--take a lesson from TV. Years ago, TV was free and was paid for by advertisers. No one thought "pay TV" would go over, and look where we are today! Treat online newspapers and magazines the same way, but don't nickel-and-dime readers with separate charges for each article or each publication. I'm on a budget and just wouldn't go there. But I would GLADLY pay one bill a month, just like I pay for cable, for unlimited access to a variety of publications. Let's save newspapers. It's the right thing to do.
