For our annual gift guide, TheAtlantic.com asked contributors and assorted luminaries to tell us what's high on their holiday wish list -- and what charity they'd like their friends to support.

What's on their wish lists?

Rhett Miller, Frontman, the Old 97s
On his list: A ukelele

This Christmas, please consider the gift of a ukelele. Four strings and the truth. Small and simple, a ukelele is the secret key to world peace. Don't buy the cheapest one out there, but don't waste a bunch of money on a fancy one. You can easily find a chord chart on the internet. Don't aim for proficiency, aim for fun. Strum absent-mindedly while on the phone or Internet, at work or on the couch at home. It's good for your soul. Tie a string between the top two tuning pegs and hang it on a nail. It will beautify any room. Maybe a kid will come along and fall in love with music. And think about how great the carols will sound when plunked out on a sweet little uke.
