The Declining Impact of Dog-Whistling

By Ta-Nehisi Coates

I guess this is the sort of thing that doesn't really qualify as a dog-whistle, so much as it's just bigoted. Again, I know there's a liberal notion that Republicans are electoral geniuses who somehow render even their errors correct. (Peace to Nikki Giovanni.)

My way of answering that is pretty simple: Would Scott Brown have thought it was good idea to have his deputy chief of staff filmed giving the Tomahawk chop, before it happened? It's the same with Romney. If claiming that half of the country is incapable of taking responsibility for itself, why did he have to be secretly taped saying so?

This is bad for Brown. It doesn't mean he loses. But no amount liberal hand-wringing or low expectations can make it into genius.
