Video of the Day: Mitt Romney Mocks John Kerry's Large House

By David A. Graham

Back in 2004, he thought it was funny that the wealthy Kerry would want to move into the White House. How does he feel now?

Earlier this week, Politico got its hands on the renovation plans at Mitt Romney's beachfront San Diego mansion. Among the features: a four-vehicle garage with a car elevator, an outdoor shower, and its very own lobbyist. No one can deny that Romney has been successful in life (or as he put it, "Guess what, I made a lot of money"), and most Americans don't seem to begrudge him that money or the trappings of it, including houses -- even if some of them would like to tax him at a higher rate.

But as the old saying goes, those who live in enormous seaside mansions with car elevators shouldn't sling mud at other multimillionaires (OK, we're paraphrasing a little bit). BuzzFeed's Andrew Kaczynski (of course) unearthed this clip of Romney speaking at the 2004 Republican Governors Association Dinner and poking fun at then-Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry: "There's a senator from my state, you may have heard, that wants to get elected president. And I don't know why he would want to do that, because of course if won he'd have to move into a smaller house."

Not a bad quip. But perhaps Romney feels a bit more empathy for Kerry these days.
