Video of the Day: Obama vs. Romney, Animated

By David A. Graham

The latest attack on Mitt Romney from a Gingrich-aligned super PAC is cartoonish. No, really.

Set aside the politics: what's impressive about this ad from Winning Our Future, a Newt Gingrich-aligned super PAC, is how effectively it channels President Obama. Past impersonations of the president have been controversial and potentially racist, but this one sticks pretty close to the script and seems to be a pretty good prediction at what Obama might say in a debate against Mitt Romney. The pitch, the vocal inflections, the "let me be clear"s -- it all comes right out of the Obama lexicon.

Two caveats, though. One, there's not enough Romney. Surely the producers could have found some way to lampoon his fondness for mid-century idioms, and the animation looks more like Marco Rubio. Second, the point of the ad, of course, is to impress upon Republican the voters that Romney would crumble in the general election against Obama, because he's too similar to the president. As our own Molly Ball reported yesterday, however, Gingrich's argument appears to be totally unsupported by evidence.
