Video of the Day: Gov. Susana Martinez as Annie Oakley

By Chris Good

New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez (R) is deadly at close range.

This past weekend, the former prosecutor earned recertification for a concealed carry handgun license, which she has held since 2009, scoring 100 percent on her exam with .38 and .45 caliber pistols. From the Las Cruces Sun-News:

"Since she and [her husband] Chuck both made careers out of taking on dangerous and violent criminals, she decided to get her concealed-carry permit for personal protection, especially when traveling alone or at night on the campaign trail," [spokesman Greg] Blair said.

As governor, Martinez has a security detail, but she still chooses to carry a weapon, Blair said.

New Mexico has some of the loosest gun laws in the nation, according to the Brady Campaign's website. Concealed carry licenses take eight to 12 weeks to obtain, requiring a two-page application, birth certificate, background check, and training certificate, among other forms.

Martinez won her first term in November with 53 percent of the vote. The National Rifle Association's political arm did not endorse her, having rated both Martinez and her Democratic opponent as satisfactorily pro gun.
