Romney Says He's Merely Doubling the Size of His Mansion

By Chris Good

Contrary to a report last week by The San Diego Union Tribune, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney says he's not actually planning to quadruple the size of his La Jolla, Calif. mansion. He's just doubling it, and he doesn't seem too concerned about the perception. From the Manchester, N.H Union Leader's Joe McQuaid:

It's not accurate, Romney said, simply. The application he made, two years ago, was to double the living space by turning one story into two. The "quadrupling'' was a measurement of added nonliving space, including a basement and garage.

That sounds more reasonable, I said. Had he issued a statement to that effect?

He shrugged his shoulders with a "why bother?'' look.
