No Deal, Boehner Says on Facebook

By Chris Good

The question of the day in Washington is, "Deal or no deal?" House Speaker John Boehner took to his Facebook page to report that there is none:

Media accounts are speculating about a "deal" between Republicans and the White House that does not exist. What does exist is the Cut, Cap, & Balance Act, approved by the House with bipartisan support and the support of the American people. The Senate should do its job, listen to the people, and pass it today.

Thursday's muggy afternoon concluded with news that President Obama and congressional Republicans had discussed a $3 trillion package of spending cuts, which would reportedly not include major tax increases -- the issue that had been Republicans' main sticking point.

The House GOP passed their "Cut, Cap and Balance" plan on Tuesday night. It would prevent an increase in the debt limit unless Congress sends a constitutional balanced-budget amendment to the states for ratificaiton; it would also cap federal spending at 24 percent of GDP. It is not expected to have a realistic chance of passing the Democratic-controlled Senate, though five House Democrats supported it.
