Picture of the Day: Glitter Dumped on Gingrigh by Gay-Rights Activist

By Garance Franke-Ruta & Chris Good

Newt Gingrich's already troubled 2012 presidential campaign experienced another awkward moment Tuesday when a gay-rights activist dumped a box of glitter on him during a book-signing in Minneapolis.

"Feel the rainbow, Newt! Stop the hate! Stop anti-gay politics! It's dividing our country and it's not fixing our economy," the protester, later identified as 24-year-old Nick Espinosa, shouted as he poured metallic flakes on the former speaker of the House and his wife, Callista, before being ushered out of the room.

The event was sponsored by the Minnesota Family Council, which supports an effort to ban gay marriage in Minnesota.

It was also the second embarrassing YouTube moment for the 1990s political figure this week. An angry Republican confronted him in Dubuque, Iowa, on Monday over his criticism of Rep. Paul Ryan's (R-Wisc.) Medicare plan.

Gingrich has since walked back that criticism, apologizing to Ryan personally Tuesday night.
