Lyndon Johnson Orders Pants (Video)

By Garance Franke-Ruta

From Put This On, "a web series about dressing like a grownup," comes this marvelous illustrated video using the real actual audio of President Lyndon Baines Johnson ordering a couple of pairs of what sound like chinos from the Haggar clothing company in August, 1964. As blogger Jesse Thorn notes, "Johnson's anatomically specific directions to Mr. Haggar are some of the most intimate words we've ever heard from the mouth of a President."

The Put This On crew "took the historic original audio" from the University of Virginia's Presidential Recordings Program and "gave it to animator Tawd Dorenfeld," with the results, above. The full, unedited audio -- and transcript -- of the presidential exchange can be found at UVa.
