Geithner Asked to Testify Before GOP Committee

By Chris Good

Darrell Issa, oversight don of the 112th Congress, has summoned U.S. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner to testify on Capitol Hill for a hearing later this month.

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, which Issa now chairs, will convene on Jan. 26 for a hearing on "Bailouts and the Foreclosure Crisis." Geithner has been invited to testify, as has Neil Barofsky, special inspector general of the TARP program.

This will be the first Oversight Committee hearing of the 112th Congress, and Issa's first as committee chairman.

Geithner has yet to confirm his attendance, according to a committee aide, who suspected the possibility that someone else from Treasury will appear in his stead.

"The Oversight Committee's first hearing will offer Members the opportunity to question the Treasury Department on concerns that have been raised again and again by SIGTARP Barofsky," Issa said in the committee's notice announcing the hearing. "TARP was conceived by a Republican Administration, approved by a Democratic Congress, and has operated for two years under the current Administration.  It's a fitting subject for bipartisan oversight in the new Congress.
