RNC Committeeman Resigns (to Run for Congress), Blasts Steele

By Chris Good

At first glance, it's yet another wave of fallout from the Republican National Committee's Voyeur nightclub/questionable-use-of-funds scandal. At second glance, it's...not.

New Hampshire RNC committeeman Sean Mahoney resigned from his committee post today, sending a letter to Chairman Michael Steele expressing disgust at the "out-of-touch, free-spending culture of Washington" and how the "same mentality has seeped into our own national party." The Voyeur scandal is the "straw that broke the camel's back." The letter is three-page diatribe against Steele, the RNC, and the Voyeur expenditure, with a discussion of what the $2,000 could have been used for, instead.

Ah, but look no further than the second paragraph of the Union Leader's story about Mahoney's departure:

The move...will be viewed as an initial step that will next have Mahoney, publisher of BusinessNH magazine, run for the 1st District U.S. House seat. In order to run for office, his resignation from the RNC would be required.

If you're going to resign anyway, may as well send a three-page manifesto and get some press.
