Our question for the day--whether Obama's security speech would satisfy his base, receives a split decision: some liberal bloggers liked it; civil liberties and human rights groups did not. In the blogosphere, liberals were generally impressed by Obama's rhetoric, reasoning, and they way he carried himself during the speech. (They liked his policy and politics, too, pointing to different parts of the speech as examples.

Among the groups, however, the story was different: to them, Obama's overtures to the Constitution expressed good ideas, but the speech was a let down. There was a concern that Obama is solidifying a precedent of preventive detentions without trial--something those groups refused to countenance and forcefully criticized the president for.
