With Democrats holding 57 Senate seats (plus independents Joe Lieberman and Bernie Sanders), Sotomayor is likely to be confirmed--with or without the help of Organizing for America and the DNC. But Organizing for America's stated goal is to keep Obama supporters engaged in the political and legislative processes after the campaign, and any major action by Obama presents it with an opportunity to do this--to reach out to Obama backers, at least a few of whom aren't typical Democrats, and try to get them excited about what the president is doing--in the meantime seeking to build visible support for Obama's agenda. And, of course, today's email presented the opportunity to donate to Organizing for America.
Organizing for America's next big project is health care reform--and more grassroots lobbying may be needed for that than for Sotomayor's nomination.
