The former congresswoman was a surprise guest in Charlotte, offering her party an emotional moment.

CHARLOTTE -- The continuing recovery of Gabrielle Giffords remains one of the most moving stories in America -- a fact confirmed by her appearance at the Democratic National Convention on Thursday.

The former Arizona representative, who was shot in the head in January in Tucson, came on stage aided by her friend Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the chair of the DNC, and recited the Pledge of Allegiance. As a teary-eyed crowd applauded, she moved slowly off the stage and was met with an embrace from her husband Mark Kelly, who was waiting in the wings.
