Video of the Day: Todd Akin's Apology Ad

The embattled Senate candidate cuts a spot talking directly to Missouri voters in a bid to save his career.

Late Monday night, after a day in which his comments that "legitimate rape" did not lead to pregnancy caused a political firestorm, Rep. Todd Akin of Missouri released this ad in a bid to save his candidacy bid for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Claire McCaskill. The Republican faces serious pressure from his own party to drop out of the race. Senators Ron Johnson of Wisconsin and Scott Brown of Massachusetts have both called for him to bow out, and Senator John Cornyn -- head of the National Republican Senatorial Committee -- sent a not too subtle message in saying Akin "should carefully consider what is best for him, his family, the Republican Party, and the values that he cares about and has fought for throughout his career in public service." The NRSC reportedly has threatened to pull out all funding support if Akin doesn't back down. Akin also bailed on an appearance on Piers Morgan's CNN show Monday, leading Morgan to berate his absent guest as a "gutless little twerp."

According to state election law, the initial deadline for Akin to leave the race is 5 p.m. central time today. After that, a court order would be needed to be remove him from the ballot and Akin would be required to foot the bill for reprinting them. All eyes will be on the clock to see what he does by the end of the day.
