Arizona Still Hasn't Heard from Obama on Immigration [With UPDATE]

More

When Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer met with President Obama in the Oval Office earlier this month, she emerged having secured an agreement that, within two weeks, Obama would give her some details on what kind of help the federal government would lend to Arizona to deal with illegal immigration and send someone out there as a liaison.

"I was successful in getting the promise that someone would be out to Arizona within the next couple weeks to speak with my staff," Brewer said at her post-meeting press conference.

"We assume that in two weeks we know exactly how many will be deployed to Arizona. The numbers are not fixed...but he felt the majority of the resources would be coming to Arizona."

(Obama had announced the week before that he would deploy 1,200 National Guard troops and request $500 million to help border states deal with illegal immigration.)

Two weeks have come and gone--Thursday marked two weeks from that meeting--and the governor and her staff have yet to hear from the White House, according to a spokeswoman. Brewer appeared on Fox News for an interview with Greta Van Susteren on Wednesday and said she hoped to hear from the White House the next day. No such luck.

UPDATE: The White House says it has already set dates with the governor's office for White House staff to travel to Arizona later this month.

According to a White House official, Obama told Brewer he would send White House staff to Arizona in June to discuss National Guard troops and additional resources. Earlier this month, the official said, Brewer provided the White House with some dates at the end of June that her schedule would accommodate. The meeting will take place June 28.

UPDATE 2: Brewer's office says the White House confirmed this morning that a meeting would take place June 28.

There seems to be some confusion between the White House and Brewer's office as to what was promised at the Oval Office meeting. A Brewer spokeswoman said that the two-week deadline on details about federal support had come on gone; the White House says Obama promised Brewer a meeting sometime in June.
