The First Day of Retirement

By Jay Lauf

There are few moments in life that can be exhilarating and unnerving simultaneously. Retirement is one of them, but Day One Stories, an exclusive photo exhibit presented by Prudential, captures both of these feelings.

Prudential asked hundreds of people across the country to photograph their first day of retirement, and each picture selected captures a moment of transition in a life but also shares individuals' unique perspectives on its trials and pleasures.

Miranda Cheng of San Diego, CA says that the greatest challenge is "adapting to a more relaxed pace of life," while Tyrone McCallum Sr. of College Park, GA gives practical advice, saying that "no matter how much you earn, invest in a 401K, IRA or TSP (Thrift Savings Plan)."

Some, such as Jone Sienkiewicz of Woolwich Township, NJ, recommend how to best use this time.

"Expand your universe with discovery of new things and appreciate of old things. Stay young at heart. Enjoy yourself. Love, laugh, cry. Do it all--and do it with gust! Never be satisfied with where you are; reach for the stars," Woolwich says.

How do you plan on spending your first day of retirement?
