Opting Out

By Ta-Nehisi Coates

I think I'll skip the Super Bowl  this year. This week's conversations have been enlightening. For me personally, there's something perverse about seeing Ben Rothlisberger in the biggest sporting event of the year. I'm not launching a campaign. I'm not presuming moral authority. I'm just saying I took a moment to re-read the docs at The Smoking Gun (here and here.) When it comes to cases like this, I think "I don't know what happened," is not a value-neutral declaration. It's one that I employ in order to continue enjoying a sport that I love.

I don't know, given the circumstances, that the NFL could have, or should have, done more. I don't know how you toss a guy who was never even charged. But I'm not the NFL. I'm a dude who likes the game, but is constantly plagued by a shortage of time. I see little wrong with spending it elsewhere.
