The Department of the Interior has canceled an upcoming luncheon
to award offshore drilling operators for exemplary safety and environmental management. The department's Minerals Management Service (MMS) has distributed the SAFE awards
since 1983 and was set to hand them out at Houston's Offshore Technology Conference on Monday. Citing a scheduling conflict, however, the agency called the awards ceremony off -- MMS officials would be busy tending to the recent disastrous spill off the coast of Louisiana.
Ironically enough, BP, whom the White House has explicitly blamed
for this spill, was an award finalist.
