The Atlantic Launches Two Original Video Series, with More Programming to Come This Year

Washington, D.C.--As part of The Atlantic's continued digital expansion--and its recognition of the power of visual storytelling--the publication is ramping up investment in its video initiatives, launching several original series and increasing the size of its video team. Live today on the Video channel are new installments of two original series, "Economics in Plain English," featuring senior editor Derek Thompson, and "The User's Guide to Energy" with senior editor Alexis Madrigal. Coming later this month is a series in which more than a dozen leaders in business, the arts, and technology describe their creative process.

"We believe that, in the frenetic world of Web video, there is a big opening for Atlantic-style programming: smart, fresh, entertaining," said Bob Cohn, editor of Atlantic Digital. "Our writers are in the business of spreading ideas--online, in the magazine, at our live events, and now, more and more, in video."

"In addition to expanding our storytelling capabilities, this is also a strategic business move for us," added Kimberly Lau, vice president and general manager of Atlantic Digital. "Today, audiences are increasingly agnostic about where they consume high-quality video, with the Web and native app experiences democratizing distribution and delivery methods. It's our intention to make The Atlantic a go-to destination for audiences and advertisers across all types of media."

Leading this expansion effort is Kasia Cieplak-Mayr von Baldegg, executive producer of Atlantic Video. Cieplak-Mayr von Baldegg has overseen and edited The Atlantic's Video channel since its inception two years ago, driving strategy and audience growth on TheAtlantic.com. Joining her are three recent additions to Atlantic Video: Katherine Wells, a multi-media producer formerly at Freakonomics Radio and NPR's Science Friday; Sam Price-Waldman, a documentary filmmaker whose work has appeared at film festivals around the country; and Paul Rosenfeld, a video journalist. Andrew Golis, The Atlantic's entrepreneur in residence and previously the director of digital media and senior editor at PBS' Frontline, will help direct product and distribution strategy.

In "Economics in Plain English," Thompson answers reader questions by breaking down complex business principles into easy-to-understand terms. His explainer series, sponsored by Box, debuts with "Why is bottled water so expensive?"

Madrigal, who reports and narrates "The User's Guide to Energy," explores the key energy sources we depend on, from coal to natural gas to wind and beyond. The series is sponsored by Shell, and the facts and figures come to life with animation by Lindsey Testolin, a San Francisco-based artist.

Future video productions will feature commentary from The Atlantic's editors and writers. The video team will also create documentary series on the kinds of topics--technology, health, business, and politics--covered extensively across all Atlantic brands online, in print and at live events. Additionally, the channel will continue to showcase new and innovative work from filmmakers, artists, and documentarians, plus archival footage and original Atlantic interviews.
