Thom Goertel, of Springfield, Va., writes: "I am in search of a word to describe the following gesture: You are entering a building many paces ahead of a stranger who is obviously heading into the same building. Rather than waiting and holding the door open for this individual, or letting the door slam behind you, you make the gesture of pushing the door open just a bit more -- all the while knowing that unless the person is a world-class sprinter, the door will be closed by the time he or she gets there."
