Noël Coward

Noël Coward's most admired creation was always himself. He inaugurated two styles of dress -- the dark turtleneck-jersey (hitherto worn only by longshoremen) and elegant at-home-wear. Personally, I'm something of a slob, but any man who loves art deco is my kind of guy. From my pictorial essay "Fashion Plates," GQ, December 1996. -- Edward Sorel, from Unauthorized Portraits (1997)
