The Boston Globe summer intern program began over 40 years ago. It accepts only college students who have at least one semester of undergraduate study remaining. An aptitude for newspaper work is the most important qualification for the internship, but nearly all applicants must have worked on a student newspaper and have had a previous internship at a daily newspaper. Internships are NOT limited to students with journalism majors. Applicants must have a driver's license and type at least 30 words per minute.
Interns are considered full-time employees for the 13 weeks from Memorial Day to Labor Day and are expected to complete a full internship unless classes require them to start late or leave early. The internship includes frequent discussions with editors as well as the intern supervisor and there are weekly seminars on the First Amendment, libel law and other important issues.
Most reporting interns work as general assignment reporters on the metropolitan staff. Others are assigned to sports, living/arts or business. There are also intern positions in photography, in the graphics department, in the Washington bureau and on the copy desk. (The copy editing positions are filled by Newspaper Fund interns. Interns at the Globe are paid a weekly wage.

Boston Review is a prestigious, fast-growing national magazine of politics, culture, and the arts. Interns work year-round on a variety of editorial and promotional projects and are essential to the magazine's operation.
The internship program includes copyediting, fact-checking, proofreading, and desktop publishing, for which training is provided. Other responsibilities include screening submissions for publication, summarizing and proposing books for review, corresponding with authors, updating the magazine's web site, and maintaining our database of writers and other contacts. Boston Review's office is small and gives interns a unique opportunity to be involved in nearly every aspect of magazine publishing.
Boston Review welcomes interns from a wide range of backgrounds. Some interns have entered the program while graduate or undergraduate students. Many use the internship as an introduction to publishing after having completed their studies or having pursued a different career. Previous Boston Review interns have gone on to work and write for Foreign Affairs, The Atlantic Monthly, The Times of London, The Chronicle of Higher Education, and other publications.
Prior work experience in publishing is less important than the applicant's knowledge of Boston Review, and the level of commitment and creativity that he or she can bring to the magazine. We offer twelve internship positions each year, four per term.
Two of the four positions are full-time, and two require a minimum commitment of fifteen hours a week. All internships are unpaid. Candidates are strongly encouraged to familiarize themselves with the Boston Review archives.

1) A cover letter explaining why you would like to participate in the Boston Review internship program. Please give us some sense of the ideas, issues, and debates that are most important to you. Macintosh experience with HTML, MS Word, Filemaker, and Quark is particularly helpful. Finally, let us know whether you are applying for a full- or part-time position. Bear in mind that there is greater competition for part-time positions.

4) A proposal for a Boston Review New Democracy Forum. Please include a specific topic for the lead article, and the names of at least five prospective respondents.

An independent publisher, we are a small dynamic company that provides excellent opportunities to acquire firsthand knowledge of the publishing industry. When feasible, the following internship positions are available: Marketing interns prepare marketing materials for the national sales force, coordinate mailings to the media, perform some clerical duties, and work on a variety of ongoing projects. Sales interns assist with writing and organizing a department newsletter, researching and developing new markets, handling some clerical and administrative tasks, and assisting department members on new projects. Publishing Services interns proofread both published and upcoming titles, organize and review foul files, review advance books for corrigenda, facilitate the circulation of book materials between the various departments, assist with various production needs, and perform administrative tasks as needed. Editorial interns read and report on manuscripts, register our books with the Library of Congress and the Copyright Office, perform library and bookstore research as needed, and assist editors with a variety of clerical and editorial duties. Art Department interns assist with all aspects of promotion and book design, so proficiency in Quark Express and some knowledge of paste-up and lay-out is required.
The desired time commitment is typically twelve hours a week. Summer interns at The Christian Science Monitor have an opportunity for "hands on" experience in the day-to-day editorial process. With a circulation of about 225,000, Dr. Andrew Weil's Self Healing is the national monthly 8-page consumer health newsletter from Andrew Weil, MD, a leading expert on integrative medicine. Our focus is on lifestyle and holistic medicine, including herbs and supplements, mind-body therapies, nutrition, and exercise.
Working with Self Healing's small staff will give you the unique, hands-on opportunity to become involved in all aspects of the publishing process, from attending editorial planning meetings to proofreading the final copy of the newsletter. You'll also learn how to research, write, and fact-check health-related material.
We are looking for enthusiastic, resourceful interns to assist with fact-checking articles, help editors with research, maintain research files, work on other editorial projects and clerical tasks, and write short pieces, as assigned.
Candidates should have initiative, enthusiasm, an eye for detail, excellent communication skills, basic familiarity with the Internet, and the ability to see projects through to completion. An interest in health or a background in science is preferred but not required. Interns should be college juniors, seniors, or graduate students, and are expected to work a minimum of 10 hours a week for at least 3 months. You must be receiving academic credit for the internship. We are accessible by MBTA bus. A transportation stipend may be available upon completion of the internship.

The Phoenix Media/Communications Group internship program has been structured to provide beneficial and educational intern assignments to qualified and motivated college students, preferably those who would receive college credit.
